Uncorked by the Sea
Don’t overlook wine shops when you are wine tasting. Kelly and I stopped by Uncorked By The Sea in Southport, North Carolina. Although it’s not a winery, a wine shop, with the right management, is a great place to taste wine. We visited on a Saturday and immediately were welcomed by Randy. He introduced himself and presented a tasting of Houchart Rosé. It was light and refreshing, especially on a hot day. I tasted agave wine for the first time. Agave wine is made from the agave plant just like tequila but has a much lower alcohol content. It won’t be my last. Chicka Boom will be released this month. There is shaded seating outside, but we enjoyed the conversation inside where wine shop members were picking up their wine club bags. The owners of Lucky Duck Farm and Home bring eggs to sell. They must be good because they sold out in minutes. The new owners, Meredith and Jeff Muehleib, recently purchased the business and Meredith made a point to stop by our table and introduce herself. Holly, who is in charge of events and marketing. is knowledgeable and friendly. We missed Laura, the manager, but look forward to meeting her next time. The wine shop doesn’t sell food, but is within walking distance to several restaurants, including Southport Cheese Shoppe. Located across the street from the wine shop. We stopped by and learned how to pair cheese with our favorite wines. We had them pick out a sampling of cheese and crackers for us. Downtown Southport is a great place to walk, browse unique shops and taste great wines.
