Stephens Winery

The North Carolina coastal region produces a sweet variety of wine. If you enjoy sweet fruit then these wineries are for you. We visited Stephens Winery in Lumberton early this summer. Sweet wine tastings are typically smaller samples and are free. On our visit, Sharon was our tasting guide and she was friendly and knowledgeable. Stephens produces wine from a variety of fruits. The apple wine was an easy drinking “by the pool” kind of wine. I enjoyed the pomegranate wine that won best in show. The best selling wine they have is the Jolly Rancher. Yes it tastes just as the name suggests. They are developing a signature series in the ice wine style originally from Germany and Austria. Ice wine is a type of dessert wine that is produced from grapes that are frozen while still on the vine. Once frozen they are pressed creating a more concentrated juice. They are open Friday and Saturday, but I would suggest checking Facebook or calling them to make sure they are open or to schedule a visit.
