Vitivinicola Cernobbio: Wine with a View

Some winery visits are about the wine. Others are about the place, the people, and the experience surrounding the wine. Our visit to Vitivinicola Cernobbio was definitely all of the above.

Tucked into the hills above Lake Como, Vitivinicola Cernobbio is the kind of boutique winery we love discovering. Small, personal, and full of character, it feels worlds away from a large commercial winery. From the moment we arrived, Gigi and Cristina could not have been more gracious. Their warmth and hospitality immediately made us feel less like visitors and more like friends they were welcoming into their home.

Our visit began outside with a glass of Gigi's sparkling wine, which was a pretty perfect way to start. Sitting outside, sipping bubbles and taking in the surroundings gave us our first taste of what makes this place so special. And then there is the view.

The winery sits in an absolutely beautiful location overlooking the surrounding mountains and countryside toward the Italian-Swiss border. With Switzerland seemingly just across the mountains, it is one of those views that makes you stop, put down your wine glass for a second—well, maybe just for a second—and take it all in.

After enjoying the sparkling wine outside, Gigi took us into his cellar, where the tasting became even more personal. We had the opportunity to taste his red wines straight from the barrel. There is something special about tasting a wine this way—before it is bottled and finished, getting a glimpse of how it is developing and what it may eventually become.

For wine lovers, standing in a small cellar with the winemaker and tasting directly from the barrels is hard to beat. It wasn't a polished, scripted tasting experience, and that's exactly what made it so memorable. We were able to talk about the wines, ask questions, and experience them where they were actually being made.

Then came the food—and there was plenty of it.

Cristina treated us to wonderful food to enjoy with the wines, turning our tasting into something that felt much more like spending an afternoon around the table with friends. The combination of good food, wine, conversation, and that incredible mountain setting captured exactly what we hope to find when visiting a small producer.

What really stood out to us was the intimacy of Vitivinicola Cernobbio. At a boutique winery like this, you aren't simply tasting what's in the bottle. You get to know the people behind it, hear their stories, and better understand the passion that goes into producing wine on such a small scale.

That's what made our time with Gigi and Cristina so memorable. They generously shared not only their wines and food with us, but also their time. Those conversations are often our favorite part of visiting wineries because wine always seems to taste a little better once you know the people and story behind it.

Between starting with sparkling wine outside, tasting reds straight from the barrel in the cellar, enjoying fantastic food, taking in the incredible views, and experiencing Gigi and Cristina's gracious hospitality, Vitivinicola Cernobbio was much more than a wine tasting. It was an experience.

If your travels take you to the Lake Como area, this is the kind of place worth getting off the usual tourist path to discover. Come for the wine, stay for the view, and don't be surprised if Gigi and Cristina make you feel like you've known them much longer than an afternoon.

For us, that's what wine travel is really about—not simply finding another bottle to drink, but discovering a place, meeting the people behind the wine, and creating a memory around the glass.

And this was certainly a glass—and a view—we won't soon forget.
